Mere images of what could have resulted from the
Yearning we all felt for her to finally be better.

Friends at times would tell me it was a bit too far,
Reaching out to an asylum to perform electroshock therapy
Interested them more than my own friend having her brain
Edited so that it would be as though she was reborn. But,
Nothing could have prepared me for the hours spent
Drawing out lessons to re-teach her how to stop staring

Hourlessly at the walls that now seemed to fascinate her.
And day by day, she would still mumble on in ways so in-
Decipherable. Yet, what I don't understand is why people

And even closer friends of us both continuously try to

Loll me down and convince me that she only got worse.
Open to their criticism, I took it and went crazy with my
Best friend since nobody ever realized that the doctor's
Ongoing attempt was a failure at this time. There was no
Thread of change appearing within her, and with this I finally
Opted that sometimes life doesn't provide a fix. Now, I shall
Move through the rest of my life with my best friend, no longer
Yielding against the bright way of our shared padded room.
Sorry, but no - this is not going to be featured in "Justice Insanity". But, I was inspired by a quote I read while researching just exactly what a "lobotomy" was. Which, in case you don't know, is pretty much sending in a sharp utensil (commonly, after its first use, an ice pick through the eye - above the eye ball, but beneath the eye lid) in to reach the brain where nerves are jumbled around. Normally, the patient would be asked to sing a common song both the doctor and patient knew - when the patient stopped singing, the lobotomy was finished.
Anyways, within a quote I read I caught a meaning between the lines... Something so obvious, I don't understand why some of us are so blind to the very fact that they had nothing in that time. They never had medication to help the patients, there was no other ways and lobotomies fixed the problem. They had nothing to compare their actions to so that they could have ever even decided if the lobotomy or electroshock treatments and more were even worth it. There was a problem, it needed a fix, and nobody was working on anything else - at least not publicly.
(Found the quote, finally) :
“It’s a hard decision to make, but inevitably life is just full of decisions like that… For me it was a good thing. I think for mama it was a good thing. And I think the lobotomy he did on her was a very good thing. Certainly the electroshock therapy was. Of course now they have medicine for this, so it’s all a moot point. But they had nothing back then. That’s the thing, people who are looking at it don’t understand, they didn’t have anything else and nobody was coming up with anything.” ~ daughter of Sallie Ellen Ionesco, first patient to undergo "ice pick lobotomy".

Simply marvelous. I do enjoy when authors use cryptic to express a meaning in a somewhat confusing poem. It affects me on a personal level, my mother went through the same kind of procedure. It was very, very heart-wrenching. My own mother forgot who me and my sister were. I hope your friend regains sanity, if she has lost it. It is a truly exquisite poem, with just hints of darkness here and there. I personally just love cryptic poetry, and am quite honored you decided to submit your works to my group. Please continue your poetry, you are quite talented.
